APPENDIX
SPEAKING TOPICS 1
1. What benefits do you get when sharing housework? (unit 1)
- Sharing household tasks provides you with a sense of both purpose and accomplishment.
- It creates the equality between a husband and a wife in the family. That everyonein the family
participates in keeping the family home running, each with responsibilities creates a happy environment
among members of the family. Children raised in such families will learn the value of empathy and can do
better at school than the others. And when they become adults they will have no trouble sharing the
responsibilities with their respective partners.
- Children who share the housework with their mums and dads become more social, more responsible
and tend to be overall good people.
- Handling everyday task teaches organization and time management skill.
- It is also a great way to teach children life skills.
2. 'Laughter is the best medicineDo you agree? Give the reasons. (unit 2)
- Laughter is good for your health. Humor and laughter strengthen your immune system, boost your
energy, reduce pain, protect you from damaging effects of stress and connect you to others. Best of all,
this priceless medicine is fun, free and easy to use.
- Scientists have showed that expressions affect the flow of blood to the brain, and that this can create
positive or negative feelings. A happy smile or irrepressible laughter increases the blood flow and
contributes to joyful feelings, but sad, angry expressions decrease the flow of oxygen-carrying blood, and
create a vicious circle of gloom and depression by effectively starving the brain of essential fuel.
3. Is music important to our life? Why or why not? (unit 3)
Music is very important to our life because:
- Music helps reduce stress and pressure. After long working hours, music is The best medicine' for
our tired brains.
- Music is like a good friend, who can comfort us and heal our sorrows.
- Music uplifts our feelings / cheers us up when we get bored.
- Music is a way of sharing a common bond or feeling.
-Music expresses our connection with our culture, and enhances our individual experiences.
4. There is no need to volunteer as very few people can benefit from volunteer work. Do you agree
with this? Why or why not? (unit 4)
I don't quite agree with this because
- Doing volunteer work is a great way to gain experience in a broad range of fields.
- It is also agoodway to make a positive impact on your community, and it really does you good.
- Volunteers have a chance to interact with new cultures, try new food, meet new people, and speak
new languages.
- Doing volunteer work can often lead to a paid job.
5. Are computer games good or bad for teens? (unit 5)
- Computer games are fun, but they are also very dangerous. Videogames have led people to doing
drugs and violence.
- Playing violent videogames may encourage kids to think violence needed for everything. These
violent games have bad influence on most children.
- Researchers have come up with the definite proof that playing violent games makes teens grow up
to be violent adults.
-Video games are too addictive. When students are keen on videogames too much, they will neglect

their school work and get bad grades.
6. Married women should not pursue a career. Do you agree? (unit 6)
Women are to resume their traditional role as housewives - staying at home and looking after the
children; attending to domestic duties and ensuring her husband's dinner is on the table when he comes in
from work. But it is not true these days; mothers should be greatly encouraged to work outside the home
because:
- working mothers contribute to the family income.
- they become good educators for their children.
- working mothers set good examples for their children.
7. Talk about a traditional wedding in Viet Nam. (unit 7)
Wedding is very important to the Vietnamese, not only for the couple involved but also for both
families. The wedding day is carefully chosen by the groom's family.
On the wedding day, the groom's family and relatives go to the bride's house bringing gifts wrapped
in red paper. People who hold the tray of gifts are also carefully chosen. There is usually a Master of
Ceremonies who introduces the groom, the bride, the parents, relative and guests of the two families. The
wedding ceremony starts in front of the altar. The bride and the groom pray, asking for their ancestors'
permission to get married. The groom and the bride then exchange their wedding rings. Often the
wedding banquet is held at the groom and the bride's home or at a hotel or a restaurant and all close
relatives, friends, and neighbours are invited.
During the reception, the groom, the bride and their parents stop by each table to thank the guests.
The guests, in return, will give envelopes containing wedding cards and money to the newly wedded
couples along with their blessing.
8. Talk about the advantages of using electronic devices in learning, (unit 8)
There are a lot of benefits of using electronic devices in learning:
- First of all, they can be used for both research and study. Students can use them to download and
store information and textbooks. This can help them save learning time and make their backpacks lighter.
- Second, students can study better with modem technology because there are many useful learning
applications on smart phones, laptops, tablets and other media players such as dictionary, spelling,
translation, pronunciation and so on.
- Last but not least, mobile devices can help students communicate with each other or relax by
listening to music and playing games when they are bored and tired of study.
- All in all, electronic devices bring more good than harm to students. I suggest that teachers should
allow students and encourage the use of these devices in class.
v
9. The earth is being destroyed by human activities. As a student, what should you do to protect it?
(unit 9)
Obviously, human beings are destroying the environment in all aspects through their actions and their
habits. They are polluting the air and water by adding pollutants to them. They are changing weather
conditions by cutting down trees in the forests and they are destroying the air by adding pollutants on it.
All of those are the cause of global warming, which leads to the severe weather- related natural
disasters such as droughts and floods, the spread of infectious diseases caused by climate change, the
disappearance of millions of species in the world and the loss of ecological balance. But it is not too late
for everybody to take actions now to reduce the risk.
As students at high school, we can make a little contribution to saving the earth with our actions such
as:
Use bicycles, use cars and motorcycles less (because car fumes pollute the air.)
M i th c m c vui lòng xin liên h hotline: 084 283 45 85

Use public transports whenever you can.
Save as much as we can (by collecting waste paper and bottles for recycling)
Cut down the energy use.
Plant trees or plants wherever they can grow.
Become vegetarians (to look after the animals )
Not dump rubbish into the rivers and sea (because water pollution can kill the marine life.)
10. What are the advantages and disadvantages of ecotourism? (unit 10)
Ecotourism has both positive and negative impact on the local community.
- When ecotourism enterprises are planned and managed at a local level, the projects create jobs
locally, reducing the need for young people to leave home to look for work in the cities. Almost everyone
in the area can become involved by working as guides, selling crafts, providing food and accommodation,
or taking part in cultural performances. Ecotourism also brings a better standard of living to the local
people.
- Ecotourism helps create a better appreciation of the world's natural resources, such as landscapes,
wildlife and coral reefs. This stimulates people's desire to protect the natural environment through the
creation of national parks, wildlife preserves and marine parks.
- Ecotourists have much greater interaction with the native people. Home stays and eco-lodges allow
visitors to experience local lifestyles and customs first-hand, and this interest helps to preserve the
region's heritage.
- However, ecotourism may displace some local residents. They either won't be able to afford to stay,
or they may be forced by developers to leave.
- Ecotourism jobs for local residents are not often paid well. And profits may spill into other nations'
pockets as wealthy investors gain from the success of an ecotourism project. -When ecotourism develops
in an area, there are more tourists coming there. This means there are more vehicles, more water and food
consumption, and more waste. Air and water pollution is unavoidable.
SPEAKING TOPICS 2
1. What is the meaning of this saying "Many hands make light work'? (unit 1)
"Many hands make light work" is often used to encourage many people to volunteer in order to
spread the burden of the work around and make the task easier.
If everyone helps with a large task, it will get done easily and quickly. This also applies to doing
housework in the family: if each member in the family is well aware of their responsibility and does their
share of work, each won't have to do much and they will make their home a happy place to live in.
2. What does 'An apple a day keeps the doctor away' mean? (unit 2)
The saying "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" probably gives you the impression that apples are
the healthiest fruits.
If taken literally, this probably means that you will never fall ill if you eat an apple a day. While
apples bring lots of health benefits, they cannot prevent all health problems from occurring. However,
they can certainly reduce your visits to the doctor in the long run. It is a good idea to include a variety of
fruits in your daily diet.Maintaining a regular, healthy eating habit keeps a person healthier.
3. How often do you watch TV contest shows? What are your favorite shows? Give the reasons why
you like them. (unit 3)
One of my favorite T.V. shows is Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
- It is a really great show because it is vicarious.
- It encourages our self-study.
M i th c m c vui lòng xin liên h hotline: 084 283 45 85

- The questions consist of very general information, which broadens our knowledge in all aspects of
life and the host is real fun.
- It is a great learning experience for many people.
- Moreover, the viewers at home have a chance of appearing on the show and have a chance to win a
lot of money.
- It's the show that almost everyone can answer the questions at the beginning of the show, so the
whole family can join in.
4. The best way to volunteer is to give people money when they need it. Do you agree? (unit 4)
Personally I don't think giving people money is a way to help them.lt is more worthwhile to teach
them to do something, than to do something for them. If you give a man something to eat, he will not feel
hungry anymore but this won't last long. If you give him an opportunity to work or teach him how to
work, he will earn his own living for a long time.
"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day
Teach a man to fish and you feed him a lifetime."
5. Do you think smartphones are useful to your learning? Why or Why not? (unit 5)
I do not support the use of smartphones in learning because I see a lot of disadvantages.
- First of all, smartphones distract students from their studies. May students may play games, text,
chat and cheat on their smartphones. They can go on the Internet, type the questions and search for the
answers.
- Second, when students use the Internet, they have access to inappropriate information, videos and
pictures. They may spend hours reading and surfing the web, forgetting about their school work.
- Last but not least, students might take embarrassing pictures of others, share them on the web or use
them to demand money and even harm their reputation.
- Overall, smartphones bring more harm than good to students. I suggest teachers ban or limit the use
of smartphones in the classroom.
6. Why should gender discrimination be eliminated? (unit 6)
- Gender discrimination in the workplace leads to an increase in employee turnover and creates a
hostile work environment. Gender discrimination also promotes harassment and possible workplace
violence. So it should be eliminated to bring equal opportunities in education and work to everyone,
especially women.
- Education is a means of overcoming poverty, increasing income, improving nutrition and health,
reducing family size as well as raising people's self- confidence and enriching the quality of life. But
nowadays in some parts of the world, chances of girl children compared with boy children being in school
are proportionately lower. This has led to the fact that most women tend to be illiterate, especially in rural
areas. But it can't be denied that when girls are offered equal opportunities both academically and in their
careers, they will grow up to enter the workplace and prove that their talents and abilities will not be
overlooked.
7. Talk about what traditions and customs a visitor to Viet Nam should know. (unit 7)
- Tet is the age-old tradition in Vietnam. It's connected with many beautiful and interesting practices.
It's the time when families reunite in the hope of good fortune for the coming year. Children are often
given "lucky money" in small red envelopes as a wish to their growth. People go out in their finest
clothes, paying visits to friends and relatives, especially those they were too busy to visit during the old
year, wishing each other good luck, good health, prosperity and happiness. Everybody tries their best to
avoid depressing topics in the New Year.
- The Mid-Autumn Festival is the second most important festival of the year in Vietnam, after the
M i th c m c vui lòng xin liên h hotline: 084 283 45 85

Lunar New Year. Parents buy lanterns for their children so that they can participate in a candlelit lantern
procession at dawn. Children parade on the streets, singing and carrying colorful lanterns of different
sizes. Like the Chinese, Vietnamese parents tell their children fairy tales and serve moon cakes and other
special treats under the silvery moon. A favorite folklore is about a carp that wanted to become a dragon.
The carp worked and worked and eventually transformed itself into the dragon. This is the story behind
the mythical symbol, Cá Hóa Rng. Parents use this story to encourage their children to work hard so that
they can become whatever they want to be.
- Three or sometimes four generations live under the same roof. Elders live with children and are
taken care by their sons, daughters-in-law or daughters.
- A Vietnamese greets the head of the family or an older person first, then the young ones. Tet festival
is the most important.
- On the anniversary of somebody's death in the family, peopleprepare meals and ofteninvite relatives
and friends to get together and talk about good respect of the dead person.
- Young people usually live with their parents after their marriage.
8. The advantages and disadvantages of using electronic devices for learning. (unit 8)
Advantages:
- relax during break time
- listen to music, play games
- stimulate students' sense of imagination
- distract students' stress
- help students develop critical thinking (when playing games)
- look up information quickly
- make students' backpacks lighter
Disadvantages:
- waste time
- become addicted to them
- affect students’ study and school achievements
- make students tend to be more aggressive (when playing violent games)
- prevent students from outdoors activities
- damage students' eyes
- too much depend on electricity
9. Discuss the types of pollution in your neighborhood and their consequences. (unit 9)
Environmental pollution is one of the impacts of human activities on the earth. It is also one of the
biggest problems of the world today.
There are four types of pollution: air pollution, soil pollution, water pollution and noise pollution.
- Most of the air pollution results from the burning of fossil fuels, motor vehicles factories, aircrafts
and rockets. This contributes to the greenhouse effect, which can lead to a series of environmental
problems such as global warming, polar ice melting, rise of sea levels and loss of land.
- Soil pollution is a result of dumping plastic or other inorganic waste in the ground and the overuse
of chemical fertilizers in agriculture. The long- term effects of soil pollution are contaminated vegetation
and the decrease of soil fertility.
- Water pollution is a result of dumping pollutants such as detergents, pesticides, oil, and other
chemicals in rivers, which makes the water contaminated.
- Noise pollution is caused by loud and annoying sounds of motor vehicles, railway, aircraft and jet
engines. It is a major cause of tress and health problems.
