Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 30 to 34.
When another old cave is discovered in the south of France, it is not unusual news. Rather, it is
an ordinary event. Such discoveries are so frequent these days that hardly anybody pays heed to them.
However, when the Lascaux cave complex was discovered in 1940, the world was amazed. Painted
directly on its walls were hundreds of scenes showing how people lived thousands of years ago. The Trang 3
scenes show people hunting animals, such as bison or wild cats. Other images depict birds and, most
noticeably, horses, which appear in more than 300 wall images, by far outnumbering all other animals.
Early artists drawing these animals accomplished a monumental and difficult task. They did not
limit themselves to the easily accessible walls but carried their painting materials to spaces that required
climbing steep walls or crawling into narrow passages in the Lascaux complex.
Unfortunately, the paintings have been exposed to the destructive action of water and
temperature changes, which easily wear the images away. Because the Lascaux caves have many
entrances, air movement has also damaged the images inside.
Although they are not out in the open air, where natural light would have destroyed them long
ago, many of the images have been deteriorated and are barely recognizable. To prevent further damage,
the site was closed to tourists in 1963, 23 years after it was discovered.
Question 30: Which title best summarizes the main idea of the passage?
A. Hidden prehistoric paintings B. Wild animals in art
C. Exploring caves respectfully
D. Determining the age of French caves
Question 31: The phrase “pays heed to” in the passage is closest in meaning to ______. A. buys B. watches C. notices D. discovers
Question 32: Why was painting inside the Lascaux cave complex a difficult task?
A. Painting materials were hard to find.
B. Many painting spaces were difficult to reach.
C. The caves were full of wild animals.
D. It was completely dark inside.
Question 33: The pronoun “They” in the passage refers to ______. A. walls B. animals C. materials D. artists
Question 34: According to the passage, what happened at the Lascaux caves in 1963?
A. A new lighting system was installed.
B. Another part was discovered.
C. A new entrance was created.
D. Visitors were prohibited from entering.
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 35 to 42.
A survey is a study, generally in the form of an interview or a questionnaire, which provides
information concerning how people think and act. In the United States, the best-known surveys are the
Gallup poll and the Harris poll. As anyone who watches the news during presidential campaigns knows,
these polls have become an important part of political life in the United States.
North Americans are familiar with the many "person on the street" interviews on local television
news shows. While such interviews can be highly entertaining, they are not necessarily an accurate
indication of public opinion. First, they reflect the opinions of only those people who appear at a certain
location. Thus, such samples can be biased in favor of commuters, middle-class shoppers, or factory
workers, depending on which area the news people select. Second, television interviews tend to attract
outgoing people who are willing to appear on the air, while they frighten away others who may feel Trang 4
intimidated by a camera. A survey must be based on a precise, representative sampling if it is to
genuinely reflect a broad range of the population.
In preparing to conduct a survey, sociologists must exercise great care in the wording of questions.
An effective survey question must be simple and clear enough for people to understand it. It must also be
specific enough so that there are no problems in interpreting the results. Even questions that are less
structured must be carefully phrased in order to elicit the type of information desired. Surveys can be
indispensable sources of information, but only if the sampling is done properly and the questions are worded accurately.
There are two main forms of surveys: the interview and the questionnaire. Each of these forms of
survey research has its advantages. An interviewer can obtain a high response rate because people find it
more difficult to turn down a personal request for an interview than to throw away a written
questionnaire. In addition, an interviewer can go beyond written questions and probe for a subject's
underlying feelings and reasons. However, questionnaires have the advantage of being cheaper and more consistent.
Question 35. The passage mainly discusses ________________.
A. the history of surveys in North America
B. the principles of conducting surveys
C. problems associated with interpreting surveys
D. the importance of polls in American political life
Question 36. The word "they" in paragraph 2 refers to ________. A. North Americans B. interviews C. news shows D. opinions
Question 37. According to the passage, the main disadvantage of person-on-the-street interviews is that they _________.
A. are not based on a representative sampling
B. are used only on television
C. are not carefully worded
D. reflect political opinions
Question 38. According to paragraph 3, the most important thing for an effective survey is ________.
A. a high number of respondents
B. carefully worded questions
C. an interviewer's ability to measure respondents' feeling
D. a sociologist who is able to interpret the results
Question 39. As it can be inferred from the passage, sociologists can be frustrated when _________.
A. respondents often do not complete and return questionnaires
B. questionnaires are too difficult to read
C. questionnaires are too expensive and difficult to distribute
D. respondents are too eager to supplement questions with their own options Trang 5
