VII. READING COMPREHENSION
Read the following passage and answer the questions.
Over the years I’ve come to realize good friends are much like fine wine. They age well over time, and
their company is to be savored, a bit at a time. And the older the relationship is, the more mellow and full
of flavor it becomes. But let me explain ...
A number of good friends now live overseas, so one doesn’t see them for years at a time. But when one
does visit, it’s like there has been no intervening gap in the relationship. Not only do we start off where
we left off, but the relationship is enriched by the maturity and the experiences we have each undergone
individually.
Travel enables one to stay in touch with them, with the occasional reunion if one is in the vicinity. Like
this friend from Mumbai, who came to Chennai years after we’d moved here. Then from Chennai, he
moved on to the US. We heard infrequently about where he was, and what he was doing, some landmark
events like his marriage to another friend from Mumbai, and that he was 45 minutes drive from Boston.
That was all we knew for years until I started visiting the US on work. On one visit, I caught up with an
old classmate from college over the phone in New York. And guess what? My friend from Boston was
arriving the next day for a couple of days on work! I met him in the lobby of his hotel, and was stunned to
see the physical transformation. But it was him all right!
M i th c m c vui lòng xin liên h hotline: 084 283 45 85
Đây là b n xem th, vui lòng mua tài li u đ xem chi ti t (có l i gi i) ế
Off we went, to a Thai restaurant for a good meal along with a bottle of white wine. Then we hit the bar
of the hotel, while we waited for my classmate to finish his shift (He was a chef in the same hotel). You
see, we are all together in Mumbai at the beginning of our careers, so it was a reunion after many, many
years. When he was done, we went to ‘Houlihans’, an Irish pub (actually a chain of Irish pubs in New
York) to chat and catch up with each other.
We talked up a storm, catching up on all the news. And as the wine flowed, so did the conversation,
degenerating rapidly into the slang and epithets with which we used to communicate as young graduates!
I called my wife up so we could all tell her what we were doing. After she talked to them one by one, it
was my turn. As soon as I came on the line, she said, “Gosh, you guys sound so sloshed!”
Drunk we were. Not so much from what we were imbibing, but from being in each others company. It
was the sheer joy of being together again. The barman, (bless him) sensed that this was very special for us
and looked after us with a personal touch, occasionally dispensing advice and comments. It was really an
evening to remember. Nay, to cherish, I did manage to spend a Saturday subsequently with my friend
outside Boston. But that’s another story!
As I said, good friends are like fine wine. Enjoy!
63. What does the author compare a good friend with?
→ ___________________________________________________________
64. Why does he think a good friend is like fine wine?
