IV. CLOZE TEST

Methods of maintaining disciplines in schools are not always (37) __________. The misbehavior of

Occasionally, (38) __________, poor disciplinary management within school can cause a more general
breakdown in order.
In modern years this has been (39) __________characterized by violence against teachers and other
children. This is, of course, not a new problem. The public schools of eighteenth and nineteenth century
England, for instance, were subject to a number of violent armed uprisings and violence against teachers
was a common (40) __________throughout the nineteenth century. Even low levels of indiscipline at
school can result in a detrimental working environment for children and good teaching will often depend
(41) __________good school discipline.
Effective discipline requires the consent, either explicit or tacit, of parents and pupils. Whilst few children
will enjoy punishment, most will submit to it providing it is perceived as being equitable.
Moreover, to be effective, (42) __________should never appear arbitrary. School hierarchies award
teachers great power over their students and the perceived abuse of this power to punish children in
arbitrary ways can be the source of much resentment and hostility.
Problems with school discipline have also led to a (43) __________in the number of people willing to
become teachers, especially in schools regarded as difficult. Student misbehavior and rudeness is the
leading cause of teacher resignations. In some areas and countries, this has led to a severe teacher
shortage, with classes either not taught, or taught by an unqualified person. In some schools, a senior
class, for example, may have up to a dozen different teachers in a single year, as the (44)

VII. READING COMPREHENSION
Read the following passage and decide whether the following statements are true or false.
With the invention of the microcomputer, a computer can now be purchased for as little as a few hundred
dollars. Taking advantage of this situation, quite a few secondary schools, and even kindergartens, have
already begun to use computers. Many other schools, however, are hesitating to introduce computer
science onto the school curriculum. They wonder if students, especially younger ones, will be able to use
these complicated machines. They also fear that they may only be suitable for youngsters who are good at
math. “What about lower students?” they ask. Will computers make learning even more difficult for
them? Then again, will learning with a computer be boring?
Schools that are actually using computers are discovering answers to these questions. Surprisingly,
students who are only 6 to 7 years of age are taking to the machines like fish to water. They are not only
finding them easy to use, but they are also finding them fascinating.
