When I injured my back, I had to take a break from my running career. I decided to introduce more
women to the sport, to show them how much fun it can be and to give them the confidence to get out and run.
I decided to start a running club for women in my area because I was annoyed by the attitude of
many race organisers. They complain about the lack of women in the sport but also use this as an excuse
for not providing separate changing facilities.
I put up posters and 40 women, young and old, fit and unfit, joined. All of them were attracted by the
idea of losing weight but I don't think they had really thought about running before. When or if they did,
they had a picture of painful training. They didn't think of chatting and smiling while running in beautiful places, like by a river.
At first, they ran for only a minute - now they can run for thirty minutes. They've also learned from
other runners about diet and keeping fit in general.
I wanted to do something for women's running and I've had so much pleasure watching their progress
- almost as much as they've had themselves.

You will hear a radio presenter talking about a photography competition for children.
For each question, fill in the missing information in the numbered space. You now have 20 seconds to look at Part 3.
Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully, you will hear the recording twice.
Radio presenter: Once again we’re holding our popular photography competition for children. It’s open
to all children between 8 and 12 who have an interest in photography. We’re not looking for special
technical skills - just the imagination to take a good picture.
Last year, the topic for our competition was wildlife and we received many excellent photos. This year
we’d like your photos to be on the subject of the sea. This is the only requirement - the rest we leave to
you. It doesn’t matter whether your photo is in color or black and white or what size it is.
A team of professional photographers will just the photograph and they’ll choose the four that they think
show the most promise. The winner will receive a camera, while the second prize will be free
photography lessons. Those in third and fourth place will receive a photography book.
If you’re interested, we’d like you to post your photograph to us here at Star Radio, 24 Wookstock
Square, that’s W O O D S T O C K, London. Remember to put the photograph in a cardboard envelope so
that it doesn’t get damaged. Unfortunately we’re not able to return any photographs. With your photos
you also need to send a postcard with your name, age and phone number. We don’t need your address-
we’ll be contracting the winners by phone.
Your photographs need to reach us by 17th August so you have a few weeks before the closing day. The
results of the competition will be announced on this program a week later on the 24th.
There will be a chance to see all the photographs entered into the competition in an exhibition at the
