VII. READING COMPREHENSION
Read the following passage and answer the questions.
Wartime inevitably advanced the cause of women’s right - women became indispensable as workers
outside home, as they had to keep the factories and government machinery running while the men went
out to fight. They were allowed into new areas of employment and were conceded new degrees of
responsibility. In 1918, they got the vote. Again, during the Second World War, state nurseries were built
on a considerable scale to enable women to hold on their gains. Men reclaimed their jobs, and women
were forced back into the home and confined their traditionally low-paid, menial and supportive forms of
work. The government closed down most of the nurseries. Theories about maternal deprivation emerged -
women who had been told it was patriotic to go out to work, during the war were now told that their
children would suffer if they did not stay at home. Little progress was made for the next two decades.
63. Which fields did women work in when the wars broke out?
64. Why were women able to work outside?
65. What does the word indispensable mean?
66. Why were nurseries closed down?
67. What does the word confined mean?
68. Which word can be used to describe the women’s going out to work?
69. What happened twenty years after the Second World War?
70. What is the title of the passage? M i
